"The music industry is one industry that
has been greatly affected by technology. In this paper I will cover the newest
way that singers and musicians are using technology, the merging of satellite
communications and radio, and technology that helps artists track how often
their songs are played on the radio."
“In countries like Sudan and Afghanistan, violations
of musician’s rights to freedom of expression are commonplace. In the USA and
Algeria, lobbying groups have succeeded in keeping popular music off the
concert stage, and out of the media and retail. In ex-Yugoslavia musicians are
often pawns in political dramas, and the possibility of free expression has
been aversely affected. Music is a free
expression of the ideas, traditions and emotions of individuals and of peoples.
It may express musicians’ hopes and aspirations, their joys and sorrows, their
very identity as a culture. Yet these expressions may conflict with those of
people in power. The ideas themselves may simply be unpopular or outside the
current thinking or practices of a regime or special interest group. For there
are those world over who are threatened by the very nature of a free exchange
of ideas. There are those who will stop at nothing to stifle them. Music
censorship has been implemented by states, religions, educational systems,
families, retailers and lobbying groups – and in most cases they violate
international conventions of human rights.”
Here are some artists that have been censored in various countries
for certain types of media - http://www.freemuse.org/sw6907.asp
This is a video interview that explains music censorship in the
Middle East done by
Mark LeVine - http://www.freemuse.org/sw15214.asp
There are 2 different types of censorship when it comes the the middle east, state censorship and cultural censorship. State censorship is the type that controls the majority of censorship but its "power" has decreased over time. Because this has happened, various amounts of arab artists are unhappy about the increased strictness in state censorship, because it aided them in terms of popularity, as most of their records were sold on the black market. The second type of censorship, cultural censorship, is important but wasn't as strict as before when artists were threatened and sometimes killed by extremist religious forces. Although the amount of threatening happening is still fairly high, especially from the Taliban and Iranian state, which is also a religious force powerful enough to ban music. But there are some cases where some Islamic religious figures are beginning to say that music is acceptable and can even be supported so that it doesn't have to be banned. On the other hand, several discussions have taken place discussing cultural censorship and if dies out due to mass realisation, censorship of music is a not good. With the citizens wanting to change, they will rebel against their dictatorship, to bring about what they want, or to convince the state government to change laws.
Since music and media censorship in the Middle East is very strict, the way this has affected music making in the Middle East is that it has become practically an underground profession. It is against the law in some parts of the Middle East to make music but since this is a form of expression people will partake in making it. Some cases are so extreme that it is not allowed for a few people to stand next to each other for a more than a certain amount of time.

Music technology in the Middle East depends on what is needed in
the music field. This means technology like amps are needed for the type of
music that is being played. For example rock and metal bands will need amps,
R&B will need dj decks depending if the act has a live band or not.
Technology is also coupled with equipment. But since music making in the Middle
East is restricted, all of the technology and equipment is affected in what’s
called the “ripple effect”.
Even though music making and technology are restricted there can
be breakthroughs or leaks in fighting against this rule. Here is a website
where music is mixed/shared on the Internet. Here is the website that does this
- http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2049406,00.html
All of this on the other hand is completely opposite in the UK. Compared to the UK technology is constantly updated and used. In music technology, there
are a lot of choices from studios to mics to different type of instruments and
makes. Technology in the UK gets imported, exported and built inside the country where as in the Middle East it is different. Because music is already restricted the rules for technology wont fall far behing. Technology has had to be "smuggled" or imported discretely. Studio's have had to be made by hand, piece by piece. If studio's are found out, they will closed down and all people associated with it will be arrested.
The way religious censorship impacted musicians and consumers in iran, is overall limiting. It blocks what is against the religion but when comes to judging, it varies. Some judgements might be stricter than others. What musicians need are resources for inspiration or equipment to in turn gain and entertain the music consumers. But because of all the restriction that is hard to do. Naturally when someone is told not to do something, depending on how they are, it makes them want to rebel especially if it comes to something they enjoy. This effect is basically happening on a national scale and with this happening to something as natural as music, it will cause and uproar and rebellion.
With the help of media and the expression of the citizens, the rebellion grew because the music makers wanted to produce and entertain more, and the consumers wanted more. This helped make the issue bigger and was taken up with the politicians. The this was confronted but took no effect, music in iran developed and become and an underground scene.
The UK is one of the most iconic places for the creation of music. Many British artists and bands have been very successful in making and selling their music across the world and of corse these artists have inspired Middle Eastern countries with their music, and the technology used to make it. Thanks to the use of technology, many styles of music have been made. It has also been used to restore old types of music. the advance in technology. The evolution of technology has effected the way that music has been created. Music softwares like Logic and Pro tools are used as Digital Audio Workstations in mixers for music studios. These "DAW"s can play, record, change, edit and produce music. Also MIDI recording, editing, and playback are being added more and more into modern DAWs of all types, as is integration with other audio and video tools in a computer. The world’s first digital recording company, Soundstream, built the first DAW in 1978. This was called the Digital Editing System, and contained DAP (Digital Audio Processor) which was a custom software package. This has now evolved into what we have today; Pro tools, Logic, Fruity loops, etc. Almost all recordings that are made, involve using a DAW, because it is the simplest, reliable and latest way of recording available.
